Daze Maxim presents new album on Hello?Repeat

Rising/Falling marks multi faceted artist Daze Maxim aka Markus Manowki’s second full length LP since 2000′s Same Place The Bot Got Smashed.

The album’s title refers to the breathing exercises of meditation; something that by chance Daze begun at the same time as the LP’s conception. This additional balance and clarity allowed the album to develop harmoniously, and paved the way for completion. There is also a nod to reflexivity as although this discipline provided necessary solace, it also demanded greater engagement.

The overall aesthetic is unquestionably true to the minimal framework Daze has meticulously crafted over the past 15 years. A playground of intermittent tempo and hybrid organic electronica, harmony builds whilst dissonance prevails. There is maturity and guts in the selection and delivery of each part’s piece in the puzzle, and a true viral beauty as it gains momentum.

What is immediately striking about the album in full is its brooding space and progression. From ambient tones and warped classic synths, to rigorous live instrumentation, the sonic palette enriches as the odyssey continues. Much akin to a camera lens drifting in and out of focus, Daze toys with periodic collapse and elongated movements, but always pulls the listener back through percussive punctuation.

The collaborations featured on the record occurred naturally, however the sessions played out differently. Sloth’s unique trumpet work on the opener is a entirely improvised workout without specific key or time signatures. In contrast Yonatan, a classically trained jazz musician from Tel Aviv now residing in NYC, added bowed and fingered double bass to an already arranged work. Finally, the piece with Bruno Pronsato became a re-imagination of a previous live composition under their OTHERS moniker. Each partnership subtly enriches the spectrum, yet never overtaking Daze’s position at the helm.

Haunting every intimate beat and phrase is a true jazz sensibility. A diligent yet self taught student of composition and theory, Manowki’s brilliance lies within his persistent tight-walk of texture and melody. Rising/Falling is as intrinsically musical and direct as is gets, and the outcome is elegantly unsettling.

While superstar Djs take the face of the electronic music world, it is some quieter individuals that actually keep this world running. Daze Maxim is one of those people. Why I say that? If you try to find an interview by Daze Maxim you will see it is a bit of a hard task. Daze falls into the category of many [vinyl only] UNDERGROUND djs who do not care about how cool they look on a stage, or how many interviews they have given, that is just press attention… what you do find however are sets, podcasts… MUSIC! With people like Daze, it is indeed all about the music in its true and broader sense in its maxim[um] level of quality… it is about cultural exchange with people they meet or work with along the way, it comes from the heart, it is an innate thing…. just what music should really be about!
Well such is the way Daze Maxim’s DJ sets and music will leave you wondering what just hit you. For over a decade, he has held a reputation, especially amongst fellow DJs, as a guardian and pioneer of quality underground electronic music, Thanks to his slick productions on the coolest labels and wholesome live performances in the world’s best clubs. From Harthouse to Cocoon Recordings Daze is recognised as a deep thinking musician concerned with composition theory and true musical meaning as much as rocking a dance floor. This approach has led to his records gracing the box of many Djs and appreciators across the globe, these include Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Arpiar, Photek, Zip, just to name a few. You get the idea. More than this though, another of Daze Maxim’s successful works was also under his Heartz4 then included in many compilations.
The early Hello?Repeat track ‘Intimacy Girl’ remains an anthem to the nightmare-like minimal weirdness that followed and, refusing to be categorized by one particular sound, his One Million Shakers EP, especially Maxim Mudhole, was played by everyone in 2008 and became synonymous as the house sound of the Cocoon Terrace in Ibiza. Studio skills for Daze aren’t just limited to his own original work either. Take his production mastery on Patrick Specke’s smash ‘(G)oing (C)oncern (P)rinciple’ or his remixing and production collaborations with Hardfloor over the best part of the last two decades. This prowess makes Daze one of the most consistently booked artists for true underground clubs worldwide. Who else can say they’ve held residency at both Berghain/Panoramabar and Watergate in Berlin, as well events at Rex Club in Paris, Bunker in New York, Arma 17 in Moscow, Club Der Visionaire or Fabric London, and global tours that have covered North America, Japan and the best of the European underground circuit? Add in Daze’s jazz and contemporary music influences and you have one of the scene’s most avant-garde and experimentalist thinkers, whose music has such depth you’ll find something new every time you listen to it. Daze’s collaboration with Bruno Pronsato called “OTHERS”, started with a release on Musique Risquee which got an immense attraction. Not for nothing was OTHER’s debut release for Ricardo Villalobos’ a long time his “secret weapon”, as stated by himself. Peeps! We have the 1st 100 covers of Toi Toi’s first release numbered as they are different from the rest. We decided to make them available at record shops only on Record Shop Day! Put it in your diary – 19th April!

Whoever knows of Toi Toi Musik will know they have become synonymous with underground quality and for keeping things close and personal for their events and agency. Well, with their new label it’s no different; they stay very true to their identity (a good mix of English and German) and their quality. The 1st EP is produced by the legendary Mr G. Inspired after playing live at one of their events he wrote the track ‘Toi Toi’, which was later released on D’Julz’s Bassculture label. As a consequence, his relationship with the couple is so personal he nurtured them to open their own label and offered them 3 tracks for TT01 called ‘Much Love EP’. The 4th track is a remix by ‘HelloRepeat’ co-owner Daze Maxim, who has been a guest resident for the party for nearly its entire existence.

Daze Maxim adds another episode to his practice of long-form explorations, on this his second release for Lisbon’s Assemble Music. This time he’s joined by a master in this field, Baby Ford, whose remixes over the past few years continue his own distinctive development of extended minimal house trips.
Daze’s ‘Beginning An Ending’ rides a skippy, loose beat for several minutes, the snares and hats gradually opening up as wordless vocalizations exclaim and interject with increasing regularity, the bass bumping contentedly underneath. Pads join the equation for an intricate midsection – evoking memories of Alcachofa-era happy experimentalism that nonetheless fit within Daze Maxim’s disciplined and dancefloor-oriented approach.
Peter Ford recasts the original into his now unmistakable soundspace, where the push and pull between front-and-centre rhythmic components and evanescent background atmospherics creates that recognizable but undefinable sense of emotion, felt but unexplained. In Ford’s world there isn’t anything as simple as a beginning or an end, so the remix provides a valuable counterpoint to the original. Given their now impressive track record, it’s no surprise that Assemble Music has pulled off another cohesive statement that works equally on the body and the mind.

Ardent vinyl purist, Daze Maxim joins the Apollonia family, while Dyed Soundorom makes his first appearance for the label.

The Hello?Repeat founder is officially the first new artist to be signed to Apollonia. His release comes on the back of acclaimed EP’s from label founders Shonky and Dan Ghenacia, together with a celebrated re-press of DJ Gregory’s POINT G classic ‘Underwater’.

Highly regarded by those in the know, yet still largely unheralded thanks to his preference to stay out of the media limelight, Daze Maxim has carved a reputation among his contemporaries of being a deep thinking musician as much concerned with composition theory and true musical meaning, as rocking a dancefloor. There was no better example of this than ‘Intimacy Girl’, the track he created under the Heartz4 moniker that became a favourite tune in 2008 for countless DJs and synonymous with the house sound of the Cocoon Terrace in Ibiza.

For his debut EP on Apollonia, Daze has created a hypnotic house gem driven by deep meaty bass and intricate multi-layered synth notes that pays dues to his masterful reputation when it comes to composition.

Heavier on the drums than Daze’s original, Dyed Soundorom delivers a stripped back, tech-friendly re-rub that reinforces his lofty reputation for balancing deep, evocative grooves with hiplashing rhythms to create a cut guaranteed to shake the floor.

Rounding out the package is ‘Tableara’, a cut that sees Daze go down a more contemplative minimal route, incorporating shaking percussion, sparse beats and a subtle moody synth line to create a brooding atmosphere that’d put it right at home in a grungy warehouse environment.

Both tracks in essence bring a linear and continuous flow, to many, a Daze Maxim signature in the sense that each element does not scream for attention alone, it is the combination of them which creates the overall impact. A dose of what we need when we need it. It is to do with structure, it is about the way in which elements are thrown in adding that bit of surprise effect which is able to stunt and amuse us all in a very good way. ‘Flash’ starts with a solid bass line, the vocal ‘Flash’, a hypnotic cosmic/trippy element and a hoovering noise on the background making up the intro. The ‘locomotive’ sounding high-hats then slam in, which together with the bass line complete a dance floor bliss of a track with all that groove. This is the point when one would think the track is there but then the slamming surprise- there comes the pads and the harmony. With a dose of thriller, the suspense created by these two prolonged notes give this atmospheric soundscape making it a groovy, hypnotic, dark, yet driving dance floor beauty. ‘Anavi’ again boosts a hypnotic vibe to it but this time with the harmony being first introduced via a classy piano. The track starts with this detroit-feel bass synth pattern forming the constant flowing base of the track, a hypnotic feel which gets overtaken by the classy touch of beautiful piano chords. Following, there comes the high-hats, this loose and light addition to it, sounding similar to when hitting the edge of a cymbal on real drums. The pads’ introduction on this one could again generate a thriller feel if on a single note however, the note progression of the pads creates a melody turning it into a rather melancholic yet classy feel, in line with the piano from the intro. The last addition , the surprise element, is then added by a discreet appearance of a TR-808 drum-machine turning this into rhythmic heave
